A Reimagined Socialist-Era Apartment with a Nautical Theme
One winter weekend, my clients and I visited their newly purchased, run-down apartment in Balatonföldvár, which they hoped to enjoy by summer. With lightning-fast planning and the help of an excellent construction team, the owners were able to move in by early July, much to their delight.
At the start of the design process, my clients requested an elegant hotel-style apartment inspired by sailing and Lake Balaton, reflecting their passion for yachting. I was given relatively free rein, which is every designer's dream, allowing me to take bold creative steps, including with the color palette.
The deep blue and gold combination was the clear choice for the nautical theme. I complemented it with high-gloss walnut veneer finishes for the built-in cabinets, while the selected furniture pieces—primarily from IDdesign—reinforce the yachting vibe with matching colors. The apartment's character is further elevated by the custom wall painting in the bedroom, the cement tiles featured in the bar area and kitchen, and the large Balaton-themed painting above the sofa in the living room.
